1950 US Census - Martha Svenia (Jordal) Askeland

Martha Svenia (Jordal) and husband Adolph Askeland were living in Lynnville township, Ogle county, Illinois at the time of the 1950 US Census.

The entries for Martha and Adolph can be found on lines 8 and 9.    Adolph was employed as a farmer.

Martha Jordal was the daughter of of Anna (Jossendal) and Gunder Jordal and granddaughter of Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson.

Marta aka Martha Jordal

Marta (Martha) Olsdatter Jordal, daughter of Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson had married Ingebrigt "Albert" Knudtsen Strand in 1882.   Martha passed away sometime between their marriage and 1896 when Albert remarried.

Here is a xerox copy* of the only photo I have seen of Martha.     It does not state the name of the man sitting down but it must be her husband, Albert Strand.

1940 US Census - Martha (Jordal) Askeland and Levi Johnson

In 1940, Martha (Jordal) Askeland, daughter of Anna (Larsdatter Jossendal) and Gunder Jordal and granddaughter of Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson was living in Lynneville township, Ogle county, Illinois.   Living with Martha was her husband, Adolph Askeland employed as a farmer.

Living a few houses away on the same census record was Levi Orrell Johnson, the son of Susanna (Jordal) and Arthur Johnson and the grandson of Isabelle (Sigursdatter) and Lars Jordal and the great grandson of Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson.     Levi was living with his wife Anna (Askeland) and their children, Arlene, Robert and Harold.    Levi was also employed as a farmer.

Omer O Jordal, Martha Svenia Jordal, LaVern Amos Jordal - baptism

Here is the baptism record for Omer O Jordal (#1),  Martha Svenia Jordal (#14) and LaVern Amos Jordal (#10), grandson, granddaughter and great grandson of Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson.

Witnesses (below) for Omer included his aunt, Guro Haldorsdatter Mæland.    Another witness, Samson Mæland is most likely related to Ingeborg as well but I have yet to find the connection.  

Witnesses for Martha do not appear to include any blood relations.

Witnesses for LaVern included his father, Lars and uncle Simon Jordal.

The baptism record indicates Omer was born October 18, 1902, though this may be an error.   The social security death index states he was born October 19, 1902.   Omer was baptized January 18, 1903 and was the fifth child born to Ingeborg (Haldorsdatter Mæland) and Omund Jordal.

Martha Svenia Jordal was the sixth child born to Anna (Larson Jossendal) and Gunder Jordal.     She was born September 7, 1903 and baptized October 11, 1903.

LaVern Amos Jordal was the first child born to Elizabeth (Brown) and Ole L Jordal.  He was born February 27, 1904 and baptized April 17, 1904.   LaVern was the grandson of Isabelle Cordelia (Halvorson) and Lars Jordal.   

Martha Svenia (Jordal) Askeland - burial

Martha Svenia Askeland, granddaughter of Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson was born September 7, 1903 in Milan township, DeKalb county, Illinois to Anna (Larson Jossendal) and Gunder Jordal.

Martha married Adolph Askeland in Creston, Ogle county, Illinois on her birthday, September 7, 1927.  Adolph was born November 18, 1900 in Illinois to Thea and Ole Askeland.

Strangely, Martha passed away, also on her birthday, September 7, 1985 in Sycamore, DeKalb county, Illinois.   Adolph passed away November 1, 1979 in Illinois.    Martha and Adolph were buried at Woodlawn cemetery (also known as Brodie's Grove) northeast of Creston, Ogle county, Illinois.

1930 US Census - Gilbert Jordal & Martha (Jordal) Askeland

Here is the 1930 US Census for Gilbert Jordal and Martha Askeland, grandchildren of Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson.

Gilbert was living in Lynnville township, Ogle county, Illinois with wife Dorothy (Ahlberg) and their daughter Vergene.    

Living a few houses away was Gilbert's younger sister, Martha Askeland with husband Adolph and a servant.

Gilbert and Martha were the children of Anna (Jossendal) and Gunder Jordal.

The third child born to Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson, Martha Jordal was married on January 27, 1882 to Ingebrigt Knudtsen at First Lutheran Church* in Lee, Lee County, Illinois.

(It appears Martha was no longer spelling her name as Marta)

The marriage record indicates Martha was 25, however she was born May 13, 1855.  She would have been 26 at the time she married.   She would turn 27 a few months later.    I guess it's not uncommon to shave a year or two off one's life.
