Omund Olson - immigration

My great grandfather, Omund Olson, the 6th and last child born to Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson left Norway and moved to the United States in 1884.     Here is the Odda parish, Hordaland County, Norway emigration record (right side, entry #2) leaving the parish on April 16, 1884.

Here is the transcribed emigration record indicating Omund left Bergen, Hordaland County, Norway on April 24, 1884 traveling on a ship on the American Line.

Here is page 1 of the passenger list showing the ship, SS Ohio, left Liverpool, England and arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on  May 13, 1884.

Here is the passenger list with Omund listed (entry #6).    The passenger list indicates "place of birth" and "last legal settlement" as Sweden.   Norway became an independent nation from Sweden on June 7, 1905.

Here is a drawing of the SS Ohio.

Torbjor Olsdatter - marriage

Torbjor Olsdatter, the 2nd child born to Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson was married to Gunnar Olson on June 8, 1883.    Here is the Odda parish record (entry #4), Hordaland County, Norway.

Gunnar Olson was born on the Sandven farm south of the Jordal farm.

The parish marriage record lists Torbjor's year of birth as 1853, which is in error; she was born March 13, 1852.

Omund Olson - confirmation

My great grandfather, Omund Olson, the 6th and last child of Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson was confirmed on August 7, 1881.

Here is the official Odda parish record from Hordaland County, Norway (entry #3) though his first name is misspelled as "Aamund".

A duplicate register was kept so the parish priest and the clerk could compare twice a year to correct mistakes or omissions.    Neither the official nor the copy of the parish records were kept together in the event one was destroyed.    I haven't always found both parish registers, but on the few occasions I have, they have been helpful to decipher illegible handwriting.

Here is the Odda parish copy of the confirmation record.

Ole Olson - death

Ole Olson, the 5th child of Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson died on May 23, 1881 in Hordaland County, Norway.    Here is the Odda parish (Ole is the 4th entry) record of deaths for 1881.

The first word "ungk" prior to his name translates to "bachelor".   I can't quite make out the subsequent word, but "tjeneste" translates to service, so it appears it relates to his profession at the time of death.

The parish record indicates he was was born in 1863.   Ole was actually born August 25, 1862.    I looked through the Odda parish birth records for 1863 and no one named Ole Olson from the Jordal farm was born that year.   My guess is that the record keeper was told he was 18 at the time of death and they subtracted 18 from 1881 to come up with 1863.

Marta Olsdatter - immigration

Marta Olsdatter, the 3rd child born to Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson was also the 3rd of their 6 children to leave Norway and (I assume) move to the United States.  As of today's date, these are the last records I have found for Marta.   The search continues.....

Here is the Odda parish emigration record, Hordaland County, Norway for Marta (entry #63) who left the parish on April 21, 1881.    This was the first document I've encountered that spelled her name as Martha rather than Marta.

Here is the transcribed emigration record from Bergen which indicates Marta (again, spelled Martha) left Norway on May 5, 1881 traveling on one of the ships from the American Line.    I have not been able to locate a passenger list which included Marta so I do not know on which ship she sailed.  There were 24 ships built prior to 1881 on the American Line.

1880 US Census - Lars Jordal & Gunder Jordal

1880 was the first US Census for two of Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson's children.

Lars Olson Jordal was living in Willow Creek township, Lee County, Illinois with his wife, Isabelle (Sigursdatter) and their children, Ole, Anne and Simon.

Gunder Jordal, who had just arrived in the United States a few weeks prior to the census was living in his brother's household as a farm laborer.

Gunder Olson - immigration

Gunder Olson, the 4th child born to Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson was the second child to leave Norway and move to the United States.

There does not appear to be an emigration document in the Odda parish records from Hordaland County, Norway, for Gunder, but I was able to locate the transcribed emigration records from Bergen, Norway.

Gunder is listed at number 6074 (spelled Gunner) and left Bergen on May 3, 1880.  The word  "ugifte' translates to "unmarried".

Gunder traveled on the ship, Circassian on the Allan Line.  (More information can be found by clicking on the respective links).

Below is the passenger list; Gunder is listed toward the bottom second above the black line.    If you look to the far right column, you will note the destination is listed as Lee, Illinois.

The ship Circassian sailed from Liverpool, England on May 7, 1880, arriving in Quebec, Canada on May 19, 1880.

Ole Larson - death

My 2nd great grandfather, Ole Larson died October 29, 1879 in Odda parish, Hordaland County, Norway.   He was born in late summer or fall 1821.   Ole was either 57 or 58 at the time of his death.   I still have not been able to locate his baptism record so I am unable to confirm the month and day of his birth.

The Odda parish record below (entry #38) indicates he was born in 1829, however, that is in error.  Both his confirmation and marriage documents (which I have posted previously) place the year of his birth as 1821.

Ole Larson's marriage record seems to indicate his father, Lars Olson was from Ragde, which is southeast of the Jordal farm.    Ragde is located southeast of the shores of lake Sandvevatnet.   I am not sure whether my 2nd great grandfather Ole Larson was born in Ragde but my search for his baptism record has been unsuccessful; either it doesn't exist or is not presently available.

Lars Olson - Immigration

Lars Olson, the eldest child of Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson was the first to move to the United States.     The Odda parish, emigration record below, indicates Lars left the parish (right side, lower portion entry #3) on April 3, 1871.

Below is a portion of the passenger list from the ship, Frigate Bird which includes Lars Olson Jordal (line #7).     His age is listed as 20, though he was actually 21 at the time.   Both the 1900 and 1910 US Census confirms Lars immigrated to the United States in 1871.

A transcribed passenger list can be found here.  Lars Olson Jordal is listed at #105.   The ship, Frigate Bird left Bergen, Norway on April 23 1871 and arrived in Quebec, Canada on June 4, 1871.

1865 Norwegian Census - Ole Larson and family

Here is the 1865 Norwegian Census for my 2nd great grandparents, Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson, residing with their 5 children (at the time of the census) on the Jordal (Jordahl) farm.

This document has the spelling of Sigri's last name as Gundersdatter, rather than Gunnersdatter which may have been another spelling of the last name.

Kari Gundersdatter was living in the household of Ole Heljesen as a "Tjenestepige" which translates to "service girl".   Dave Jordal, the great grandson of Sigri and Ole hypothesizes that Kari may have been the older sister of Sigri.

Ole Larson is listed as a "Dagarbeider" which translates to "hired".   Dave believes Ole Larson may have been hired to cut the grass and had a tailoring business on the side.

Another version of the census can be found here, which indicates Ole Larson and family were a separate household from the Ole Heljesen family on the Jordal farm.   I assume that means they lived in a separate home on the same land.

Gunder was the 4th child born to my 2nd great grandparent's  Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson. Gunder (some records spell his name as Gunnar) was born May 25, 1859 and baptized June 26, 1859.

Marta Olsdatter - baptism

The 3rd child born to my 2nd great grandparents, Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson was Marta Olsdatter.   Here is the Ullensvang parish record of her baptism (#66).

Marta was born May 13, 1855 and baptized June 10, 1855.   Looking in the right hand column, there was a Marta in attendance and using the Norwegian naming patterns, it would appear to be Marta Olsdatter's maternal grandmother.    The last name is difficult to read, but it appears to be Marta Torbjorsdatter.

Torbjor Olsdatter - baptism

Torbjor Olsdatter was the second child born to my 2nd great grandparents, Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson.     Here is the Ullensvang parish baptism record (Torbjor is listed at #54) from Hordaland County, Norway.

Lars was the eldest child of six born to Sigri Gunnersdatter and Ole Larson, my 2nd great grandparents.

If you review my previous post regarding Norwegian naming patterns, you can see that Sigri and Ole had followed the pattern for naming the first born son.

Sigri Gunnersdatter - confirmation

Here is the confirmation record from the Ullensvang parish in Hordaland County, Norway for my 2nd great grandmother, Sigri Gunnersdatter (left page, middle section #27).

Sigri was confirmed in 1842, though the month and day are illegible.

Thursday, July 7, 2011

Ole Larson - confirmation

My 2nd great grandfather, Ole Larson (#29 - seventh from the bottom, left page) was confirmed on November 18, 1838 in Ullensvang parish, Hordaland County, Norway

According to this record, Ole received his vaccinations on January 12, 1824*.     His father (my 3rd great grandfather) was Lars Olson; his mother's name is not legible.   Ole Larson and family moved to the Jordal farm sometime after his birth (late summer/early fall of 1821) and prior to his confirmation.

*I've not been able to locate the parish record for his birth or vaccinations as the farm name and parish listed are not legible on either his confirmation or marriage parish record.
